Harbour Rehabilitation

Harbour Rehabilitation is a 6000 square foot physical therapy clinic with a friendly and professional atmosphere.  Large windows provide a scenic lake view that creates a peaceful environment and a pleasurable physical therapy experience for our patients.

Voted "Best Physical Therapy Clinic" for three consecutive years, Harbour Rehabilitation offers a multidisciplinary approach to total body healing.  The physical therapy team works directly with Orthopaedic Surgeons, Neurosurgeons, Chiropractors, Physician's Assistants, Massage Therapists and Athletic Trainers.  This unique holistic approach provides a "one stop" facility where patients receive the highest quality care and ultimately achieve optimal results.

Harbour Rehabilitation continues to be a leader in modern physical therapy practices in the Hampton Roads area.  Our clinic boasts cutting edge equipment, and our therapists implement the most current treatment techniques.

In early 2000, the director of Harbour Rehabilitation, who works side by side with Dr. Wardell, introduced Spinal Decompression Therapy to the clinic.  We now own four of the most current Triton DTS systems with up-to-date protocols to help alleviate spinal pain.

The clinic's newest therapeutic equipment includes the Lightforce laser (Class IV) deep tissue laser, making Harbour Rehabilitation the first physical therapy clinic to offer this modality for the healing of soft tissue injuries.  In addition, use of the Wii Fit and the Kinect from X-Box are often incorporated in order to enhance patients' balance and exercise programs.  Patients are able to enjoy, play and exercise, a combination that often improves their rehabilitation outcomes.

The clinic provides traditional modalities including heat and cold therapy, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, traction, and Anodyne therapy.  Therapeutic exercises include stretch and strength training programs that are tailored to the individual patient by the therapist.  Progression to a home or gym based program is easily achieved by training patients in our state-of-the-art progressive rehabilitation gym located adjacent to the therapy section of the clinic.  Some patients do not respond to traditional therapy or may require one-on-one training assistance.  In these cases, the staff at Harbour Rehabilitation provides an excellent scapular and spine stabilization program.  The head trainer of this program has over fifteen years of experience in the field.
In addition to having the most up-to-date equipment, our staff is highly skilled in current physical rehabilitation approaches.  Our physical therapists frequently attend continuing education programs in order to provide patients with the best therapeutic techniques.  In addition, our therapists are certified to administer the following techniques:  McKenzie, Strain Counter Strain, Active Release Technique for the Spine, and Graston.  Other techniques include Jin Shin Do, Myofascial Release, Mobilization with Movement (Mulligan) and Spinal Manipulative Therapy.

What sets Harbour Rehabilitation apart from other physical therapy clinics is the integration of physical rehabilitation techniques with chiropractic services.  Manual physical therapists are able to perform basic mobilizations and manipulation techniques.  By having a chiropractor to assist with patient care, we are able to provide joint specific and advanced manipulation techniques in order to facilitate pain management.  Clinicians who once thought this kind of collaboration would have negative repercussions for the profession of physical therapy are now asking how they can make the joint effort work for them.  The New England Journal of Medicine, along with most other spinal manipulation journals, supports that the best patient outcomes are achieved with a combination of manual joint manipulation and exercise.  There are no other professions that work better together to achieve this goal.
Harbour Rehabilitation takes pride in making patients' physical therapy experience personal and fun.  The staff not only provides a "hip pocket" approach to therapy (one-on-one assistance during therapy sessions), but they also understand and respect that pain and injury not only affect physical health, but mental and emotional health as well.  The staff at Harbour Rehabilitation is dedicated to providing skilled quality care, encouragement and support as the patient moves through the healing process.
